About the Chef

A Hustler's Journey

"A regular guy from West Baltimore. My story has taken me a lot of places on this journey — but my city gave me the tools to be fearless and conquer anything." — Chef Mase

That's the whole journey in his own words. Chef Mase is not a culinary school story — he's a Baltimore story, and he represents for every person they said couldn't do it.

The streets raised him — they made him a hustler, and the school of hard knocks gave him his education. He took everything the city gave him, everything his family poured into him, and everything the doubters said he couldn't do — and put it all in a pan. No silver spoons. No shortcuts. Just real kitchens, real work, and a gift that refused to be ignored.

But the full story is deeper than that. He grew up carrying things no child should have to carry. The city gave him flavor, but it gave him scars too. There were years when the weight was heavy, when the easiest thing in the world would have been to give up — and nobody would have blamed him.

He didn't.

The Healing

Here's the part most people don't put on their website: Chef Mase went to counseling. He sat with his childhood trauma, faced it, and did the work — the kind of work that doesn't come with applause, that nobody sees, that's harder than any double shift in any kitchen. Where he's from, men aren't supposed to say that out loud. He's saying it anyway.

Because healing isn't weakness. Healing is the ultimate hustle — betting on yourself when you're the one who's broken, and winning. And as he continued to heal, he kept building: he finished school, studied his craft, and earned the credentials to stand with any top chef in the game. Everything you see today — the business, the brand, the menu full of family names, the tables full of people he feeds — was built by a man who first had to rebuild himself.

He didn't leave Baltimore behind to become a chef. He became a chef because of Baltimore.

Born Into the Kitchen

Through all of it, the kitchen was there. Cooking was never a career choice — it was an inheritance.

His mother introduced him to cooking — and somewhere between watching her work and tasting what came out of her pots, he found his love for it. She was a chef in her own right, and she gave him the foundation everything else was built on. She taught him the basics — how to hold a knife, how to season by feel and taste as you go, how to stretch a meal so everybody eats, and how to put love in the pot. From there, he never stopped studying — picking up techniques from top chefs across different cuisines, adding new layers to what she started. But the fundamentals? Those came from her kitchen — where he grew up watching simmering pots become gatherings and meals become memories.

His grandmother — South Carolina born and raised — taught him what a proper gravy is supposed to be. His father, the original Mase, made the man. And Park Heights, where Jamaican culture runs deep on the Avenue, taught him that flavor has no borders — that jerk seasoning and Southern soul belong at the same table.

Cooking wasn't an escape from his story. It became the way he tells it.

Why "Legado"

Legado is Spanish for legacy — and that's exactly what this menu is.

Look closely and you'll see it: nearly every dish carries a name. Some honor the family who inspired them — a wife who doesn't play about her hibachi, kids with impeccable taste, a grandmother whose potato salad skipped a generation and landed in the chef's bowl. Some honor the ones who opened doors — the chef who gave him his first shot at running a kitchen, the high school teacher who first made him believe in himself. And some are memorials — to loved ones gone but never forgotten, whose names are now spoken every time a pan leaves the kitchen.

When you order from Legado, you're not just choosing a dish. You're being handed a chapter of somebody's story — and a seat at the family table.

For the Ones Who Feel Like Giving Up

If that's you today — this page is for you.

Chef Mase built all of this from a place they said nothing good comes from, carrying pain they said would break him, in a world that never handed him anything. If he can turn trauma into a table where everybody eats — so can you. Your story isn't over. It might just be simmering.

HEART. HERITAGE. HEALING. IN EVERY BITE.

"I'm a regular guy from Baltimore who made it — and I made it without changing who I am. The streets made me a hustler, and the school of hard knocks gave me my education. I sat in counseling and faced everything my childhood put on me, and I came out the other side and built all of this. My mother taught me the basics — everything starts in her kitchen. My grandmother taught me patience. My father made me a man. So if you feel like giving up today, hold on — if I made it, you can make it. From my world to your table."
